Song of the Day: Desert Hearts – ‘Powertrash’
Wednesday, February 27th, 2013
In around 2005 I was introduced to Desert Hearts by a highly influential and well respected gentleman in Northern Ireland.
It subsequently became one of my favourite music making locations in the whole world and has introduced my peers and I to an almost life-changing amount of artists.
Desert Hearts previous records Let’s get Worse and Hotsy Totsy Nagasaki still remain as two of my most played albums ever and I urge anyone to investigate them as they really possess some of the most underrated music I have ever had the pleasure of listening to.
I was quite nervous when I heard they were making a comeback after a lengthy sabbatical. I think that the pedestal you put artists on will always create these nervous feelings when it comes to new releases. I guess us fans just have to accept that artists will always evolve in different ways and not necessarily in the way that we would want them to, but the way they should.
Our Song of the Day is a new track from the band. Powertrash has moved the band in more of a pop direction and whilst they always had a strong pop vein running through previous songs, it is now that it has fully bloomed.
Powertrash is an uplifting and glorious number. It tingles invitingly to all new listeners and is a brilliant reinvention of their sound. Powertrash has unbelievable romanticism with its surging orchestrations, yet its subtle acoustic moments reveal the layers and maturity that Desert Hearts now have.
This is sheer poetry.
