Song of the Day: CHURCHES – ‘Lies’

Thanks to Black International for the posting of this SoundCloud, no doubt we would have eventually got around to it, but I must credit where it is due.

My wee heart flutters when I hear a track for the first time by a new group and it immediately goes on repeat after the first play. Churches are a new group featuring members Iain Cook, Lauren Mayberry and Martin Doherty. Some of you are going to know immediately who all the members are. Firstly we have Iain Cook of Aereogramme/The Unwinding Hours, Lauren Mayberry who is a freelance journalist and is also known for her vocals with Blue Sky Archives and last, but not least is Martin Doherty of The Twilight Sad fame.

On paper you may expect an emotive post-rock production, however instead we have stellar, electro female fronted glory! Therefore it is quite right that our Song of the Day is ‘Lies’. Some may say this is pop music for adults, but I just say it is immediate gratification. With sweeping synths, juggernaut beats and honeyed vocals this has it all.

Grab those cans and turn it up loud.
