Happy Birthday Rabbie Burns! GET LAID to celebrate!

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Robert Burns Birthday always reminds me of school and the dinners we had. Sneaking whisky into the meal and ending up completely blazing, key speakers reciting their chosen Burns’ poems and the mass eating of haggis. Jesus Christ, I love haggis. Anyway, I digress. I should get onto the musical point I am trying to make.

Those two wee ladies at LAID (for those that don’t know this is not a sexual promotion course, nor a human battery farm). LAID is the new gig promotion night started off by the same two girls Hannah and Aileen that crashed into our lives with MILK! Dairy is good for the soul.

Tonight LAID will be celebrating Rab’s birthday in their unique style. 3 artists will be gracing Bar Bloc for a treat of an evening.

First up are Podcart favourites Trapped in Kansas. The math-rock quartet have an impressive number of accolades under their belt. Their latest EP ‘How To Go’ is nothing short of inspiring. Finn, Chris, Iain and Colin have maintained an individuality with their music and having lived parts of their journey quite extensively, then we are confident in saying they are an incredible band to see live. Next up is Poor Things, first introduced to us by those lovely chaps French Wives. However, they sound nothing like their recommenders. These lo-fi beauties are dreamy, captivating and take me right back to my Pavement days. They create slices of weird rock with tracks such as ‘Retreat’ that I wholeheartedly welcome with open arms. Poor Things are a band that has been on heavy rotation in my ears over the last 12 months. (soundcloud.com/poorthings)

Finally, a curve ball is being thrown in the shape of Scottish hip-hop legend Loki. There is promise of a unique take from him on Robert Burns’ ‘Toast to the Lassies’ which we are sure will be every bit as brilliant as we predict. (

It has to be said that the MILK/LAID girls should be given a huge pat on the back. They are consistent with their nights and cover all spectrums of this diverse and wonderful music community that we are all part of. I am sure tonight is going to add to the confetti of delights that they have showered us with.

Well done girls! Tonight is FREE! Yes, that’s right it will cost nothing so you have extra pennies to spend on your whisky to toast this evening.
