Inspector Tapehead

4.15.2009 | Artist Of The Week

Have you ever sat with a group of friends, heard a song and reflected on what a masterpiece it was?

On the 13th April 2008 team PodcART experienced this. Our chosen Artist Of The Week is the glorious Inspector Tapehead. They hail from Glasgow and are a jewel filled compass that will point you to a destination as rich as a Dubai palace.

The track that captivated all of us is ‘Pherenzik Tear’, one that I can only compare to traversing your life though one song. You start with a wistful rocking beginning, like sitting on the porch of your house and wondering what to do next, your thoughts rapidly change like the gentle guitars that initiate this piece. Before you know it you stand up and start to walk briskly passing the fields, the trees, smelling the summer breeze. Then enters the beat, your heart lifts as you think of the one you love. This is it, this is the time to tell them you love them.

This song has so many directions that you will always be held in a magnetic rapture. This song has the longest instrumental introduction I think I have heard; ‘It’s not that I don’t love you, I don’t want to be excited. It’s not that I don’t love you, I don’t want to be restless at night.’ If ever a song was to cite the innocence and vulnerability of love this is it.

The song is like sitting on a sandy beach from tide out to tide in. As the tide brings in all its debris to a barren shore this song brings in it’s quirky percussion and a piano ripple that will make you smile. This song augments as the day builds., from here on in everything is going to be magnificent.

I have never written about one song in such length. However, my friends and I were so in awe of this song that it felt like I had to pay as much attention to the music upon reflection as when the song immediately affected me.

This song brushes the hair from my face with its imaginary hand. It lands kisses on my lips like first love and holds both my hands whilst spinning me round in fields of luscious fragrant grass.

Inspector Tapehead are a phenomenon for Glasgow and this country. They are one of a kind. They play Homegame Festival this weekend. The festival was created by Fence Records, King Creosote and The Pictish Trail, gods of the Scottish music scene. Inspector Tapehead will soon be dining with these kings as if they have been part of this royal family for centuries.

Love creates journeys in our lives, from the tiny crushes to the full blown heart pounding fables. Songs do this also. Inspector Tapehead have managed to interpret these journeys musically. Take note of my tears and keep them for your records for you have retained my heart as evidence.
