St Deluxe are one of those bands that you should have heard of but instead a random encounter introduced you. Even now when I listen to them I still cannot believe that I did not hear of them sooner. I felt myself verbally shouting my PodcART colleagues down as to why I had not heard of them sooner, as if it was not my fault!

Well, it is my fault. They have those dirty, distorted siren guitar sounds that make you reminisce in a way only fitting for true alternative fans. Some may interpret that as being pretentious but those that love that grungy, melancholic sound will know what I mean.

For me it was like going back to when I first heard Sonic Youth’s‘Experimental Jet Set, Trash And No Star’. It created the same feeling of something new and exciting. It was as if someone had taken their sharp nails and dragged then up my back. Such a violent piece of imagery but I mean it in a purely erotic sense, their sounds make you passionate enough to be ferocious.

Tracks like ‘New Wave Stars’ take me back to that initial comparison of sirens. This song will mesmerise you in a way that oscillates your feelings. You will be pushed and pulled with your morals, one minute it will make you think of that one person you loved that now disgusts you and then it will lift you up to a place that makes you invincible.

‘Crystals’ is pure, unadulterated rock. There is no other term for it. The driving force of this track is astounding and it will take all your human might to fight the urge to open your windows and scream the world down. A tsunami of sheer fury comes over you, one that continues this underlying salacious wave.

I love this band; it is as simple as that. They make me feel alive. They will take you as if putting their hands on each side of your head and will lock you into their microcosm of supremacy. It is  like standing behind a jet engine and being blasted with the most beautiful sounds of thunder you are likely to hear.

St Deluxe are an ostentatious addition to my life, one that diminishes the material crap people buy into and one that injects the belief of honest, hardcore rock back into my music collection.
