The Tramway Revival
11.17.2009 | News
Long before I moved to Glasgow, when I was a child, school trips occasionally consisted of going to see glorious theatre productions in the Tramway Theatre, Glasgow. It had a real history about it and the building itself just created excitement as soon as you went inside.
In recent years I went to see the last ever Triptych Festival with bands like Mogwai, Frightened Rabbit, Errors and many more. This was bettered by the fact that Tramway is only a 5 minute walk from my flat in the Southside of Glasgow. That day just brought all the feelings back of what a wonderful place the Tramway is.
Glasgow PodcART has now formed a strong friendship with the Tramway team and we have been lucky enough to see a revival of sorts. The Scottish Ballet company has set up residency within the building and a buzz has started to grow, Tramway is going to be one of the most talked about venues in the UK.
This week they have launched a new Podcast series and YouTube Channel and people are really starting to sit up

and notice this amazing place again. Glasgow PodcART was happy to assist Tramway in the podcast creation and is very proud and honoured to have been asked to help.
The new concept for Tramway is to produce readable material to coincide with exhibitions containing information about the artists background and inspiration and in addition produce a podcast to support the exhibit’s or installations. For people like myself who sometimes find themselves a bit out of their depth it is an inclusive yet challenging and (hopefully) entertaining way to get more information about what is happening in Tramway . In addition, by producing these Podcasts and videos Tramway have a way of connecting with the public and giving them a unique insight into what they do.
The YouTube channel will host clips of performances and exhibitions in the venue, discussions with artists and directors, as well as responses to the programme by the audiences. Check out the new video here: http://bit.ly/1S0xk

We recently attended the Lara Favaretto exhibition which runs until December. Lara is a unique, world renowned artist who has built massive installations in the past but has never shown in Scotland before. Her current exhibition contains huge revolving brushes which look like giant carwash brushes. Behind each rotating brush is a huge piece of metal which over the course of time will wear down. I have to say when I heard the concept I was a bit lacklustre. However, when you enter the space are greeted by four giant walls of rainbow colours and you hear and feel the whir and electricity driving through the room it almost takes your breath away. The astonishing fact is that this woman has built these pieces from scratch and it really is a sight to behold. Within the centre of the room are giant confetti cubes. They are held together by the weight of the confetti and over time they will indeed collapse and disperse through the movement of air and people within the space. An almost melancholy undertone to this exhibition, but one that literally makes your hair stand on end and also fills you with glee when the great machines are spinning away. This is a must see exhibition and another reason why the Tramway continues to bring excellence to this city. Lara’s exhibition will run till December 13th and full details and times can be found here: http://bit.ly/2gT2De
The Lara Favaretto introduction is available to listen to on Tramway’s podcast feed here: http://bit.ly/3VnNbF along with Hilary Lloyd’s introduction which can be seen in Tramway until December 20th.
You can even subscribe to directly in iTunes, where you can download the podcasts and listen to them with an mp3 player: http://bit.ly/4Cbw57
We at PodcART are very excited about the plans that Tramway have and will be front row to experiencing them. They are bringing diverse art forms to Glasgow in a space that is simply beautiful. The construction of the building itself is a talking point a lot with The Hidden Garden which one has to experience. We urge you to check out the events happening at Tramway as there is something for absolutely everyone.

One of the best shows ive ever seen in my life was at the tramway in 1989 or 90(i forget at moment).IT was TEST DEPARTMENT along with BRITH GOFF(hope i got spelling ok) the GODDODIN(spelling again)SHOW.IT was absolutely fantastic and changed a lot of people i know’s attitude toward theater and music for that matter.I got to play along with a few of the guys from TEST DEPT.in the following couple of years at various events and had the honour of havin Angus,Alistair and Gus join my band at the time(CLAN SPAMBORSKEE) on stage at a few different shows of ours.Drums,Bagpipes and Drums for each.Great guys.Angus now runs a new theater co.I dont know what became of Alistair(lovely big fella) and Gus.continues to play music i think. Its worth checking out the Album if you can get your hands on it.ICKY.
