Song of the Day: Department M – ‘Absentia’
Wednesday, May 29th, 2013
The amount of pounding new electronica artists flooding the music industry at the moment is at times overwhelming.
I am not going to lie; I have found a number of them extremely boring and feel they are bringing absolutely nothing new to the table. Differentiation is something I bang on about constantly, but Song of the Day is from someone that makes me somewhat contradictory.
‘Absentia’ by Leed’s based artists Department M is not completely diverse, but it just strikes a bloody wonderful chord with me. The production of this track is notable. A lot of Radiohead fans will probably be reminded of the ‘All I Need’ bass synth line. It is more than that though – it is also about the rapturous opening up of the track just after a minute in. It is about the endearing vocal that provides a decorous melody over the track. It is about the ear-splitting percussive scratches. It is about all these things coming together to make this song stand out.
If you are going to do something that has saturated the music industry, then don’t just get a Casio, a drum machine and hope for the best. Department M have helped put Leeds on the map when it comes to new music.
